Notes on the Piece:

“Moroccan Sun” a.k.a “The Blue One” is part of an in-progress collection I’ve been calling: “The Scrapwood Collection”. Each piece is a mixture of spackle and dry pigments layered onto various pieces of scrap wood that I carve into.

Moroccan Sun is a mixture of spackle and dried indigo pigment I purchased in Marrakech in 2019, layers of yellow and orange pigments gifted to me by my mother (who produces color pigments for work), and a round piece of wood I found in the scrap wood bin at Parsons.

This collection is a little bit more about decorative texture, found objects, and pretty colors — and a little bit less about composition and perfection. When I started carving, I wanted the natural movement of the spackle tool to dictate how the marks were formed. The outcome ended up looking like birds in a blue sun.

Even though this is actually the second piece I’ve made in this series, I felt eager to show it first. I’ve made a few of these now, but I think this one is a good anchor point for where I’m trying to go with it
