Notes on the Piece:
New Jersey Turnpike, aka The Nails, was painted during the summer of 2021, from a very real photograph I took driving back from the Jersey Shore in 2018. I knew from the second I took the photograph that I had something unique and special – something that could only ever be witnessed in my home state. I must admit I have spent large amounts of time wondering what this woman was listening to. In my fantasy, it’s Raspberry Beret by Prince.
I was thinking about watermelons and juicy colors while painting this piece. After countless rounds of unsuccessful color mixing, I eventually had to purchase a specific shade of bright pink to achieve that color you see in the nails and car. I just love how the car window is perfectly framed by the background. It feels like a painting within a painting.
The original piece is 11x14 on hand stretched canvas. It was the first painting I finished after the world opened back up. It has been professionally scanned and printed so that each of the details are visible.
