Notes on the Piece:

This is the second installment of my beaded glass and fruit series. It was a commission for David and Tanner, who are in the process of redesigning their kitchen to be predominantly a graceful green. After connecting with me and requesting a collaborative commission, David shared an interest in sophisticated but whimsical subject matters like pineapple and macadamia nuts, which remind them of their honeymoon in Hawaii.

The composition itself is comprised of a selection of my depression-era glassware, fresh pineapple, limes, a bay leaf, lavender, whole and shelled macadamia nuts, and coffee beans. It was styled on a wooden cutting board in my apartment, sprayed with water, and photographed in front of a graceful green backdrop at different parts of the day. I took about a hundred photos over the course of two days, but the selected photo was taken as the sun was setting.

On a technical note, I’m very proud of the amount of detail I was able to achieve in the pineapple skin, and of the hints of blue I added to the pineapple fronds. One of my favorite parts is the absurdity and detail of the drink full of pineapple cubes to the right.

On a personal note, these time-consuming paintings act a bit like milestones in my life, and this work was painted every night of the same, joyous summer I was hired on at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. I hope it adds joy, sophistication, and whimsy to David and Tanner’s newly redesigned entertaining space.

Prints of Entertaining David will be professionally scanned and giclée printed on luster photo paper so that all the little details and canvas textures are visible.
