Notes on the Piece:

Roman Real Estate, a.k.a. The Ruin 16”x20” (acrylic on canvas) is the second commission-level work I’ve produced without a client in mind. It was painted over the course of two years (2022-2024) and depicts an apartment building

built on top of an ancient Roman theater.

I snapped the photograph for it in 2019 while I was studying abroad in Florence. I was visiting my cousins during break when one said she had to go into town (Chieti) for some work. While I was walking around waiting for her to finish, I stumbled across this ruin with an apartment building sticking out of it. I loved how campy it was: the aggressively destroyed ruins below the pink laundry drying in the wind.

I would have finished this piece sooner, but several surgeries and commissions got in the way. I put it aside several times but kept coming back to it when it was time to paint. I’m so proud of the brickwork that I’ve honesty shocked myself. It took MANY consecutive nights of painting each individual brick 😂

Because commissions are collaborative works, I think “personal works” are interesting in their own way. I think of Roman Real Estate as a milestone of my personal skill and I’m interested in seeing what the next one will be.

If you are interested in purchasing this work, it is available on my website.
